324 jobs lost at Weston-area plant

Maple Leaf Foods will be closing the old Shopsy’s plant just north of Weston, at the cost of 324 jobs. Maple Leaf is laying off 1500 people in a nation-wide reorganization.

The company is still barely profitable, but according the the Globe and Mail,

Now that the loonie is close to par with the U.S. dollar, [the CEO] said, Maple Leaf Foods and other food processors are struggling to compete against larger, more productive U.S. companies.

“We are to some degree the poster child for the productivity gap between Canada and the United States,” he said. “Maple Leaf and the Canadian industry must change to be globally competitive.”

The neighbourhood plant is on Bartor Rd, north of Wilson, parallel with the 400.
