Man murdered at Crossroads

A man was killed yesterday in a brazen daylight shooting yesterday. It happened at about 3:45 p.m. in the Crossroads plaza near the 401.

According to CP24, the killing happened near the Tim Horton’s. The man was shot in his car and pronounced dead at the scene.

It was the third fatal shooting of the day in Toronto.

Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.

Police searching neighbourhood

Armed police cordoned and searched parts of Weston this evening. Members of the Weston Facebook community said that the police may have been looking for a man with a gun.

In news that is possibly related, a car crashed at Jane and MacDonald Avenue and there was a high-speed pursuit near Jane and Trethewey. If I can confirm that the incidents are related, I’ll update.

Upcoming events

Toronto Police are hosting an online meeting to discuss bringing the FOCUS program to 12 Division. The FOCUS program (as I understand it) coordinates a group of social programs to respond to people at acute risk of crisis or anti-social behaviour.

The meeting will be August 26 at 6:30. You can register online.

The city will be presenting their findings on laneway suite applications at two sessions: one on August 31, and another on September 1.

This isn’t a presentation for solely Weston and Mount Dennis, but it is an idea that could change housing (a little) here. We have a number of laneways that could be used to build additional housing as planing rules change.

Another, similar housing option—garden suites—took a small step forward in a committee meeting in late June.

There will be free print-making and story-telling workshops every Wednesday this fall at the Weston Common.

Two handguns seized, two people arrested

12 Division police arrested two people and are looking for a third after a car was stopped near Weston and Oak. The police say they discovered two handguns and ammunition in the vehicle. One person was arrested at the scene, one fled and was apprehended, and a third evaded arrest.

The police say that on August 6, they stopped a car that ran a red light. One of the occupants was “wearing a balaclava on top of his head” and a marijuana grinder was visible. A firearm handle was, an officer says, visible under the passenger seat.

When the police asked the occupants to step out of the car, Constable Bryan Irwin “observed a firearm inside the vehicle and alerted his partner, Const. Imran Mandozai.”

Two Glock handguns were seized. Ramone Thomas, 22 and Osman Aim, 18, face many charges for unlawful possession and storage of firearms. Biniam Habtamu, 24, is being sought by police.

Two men wanted in separate incidents

12 Division police are looking for two men accused in two separate and unrelated assaults.

Liban Mohamud, 39, is alleged to have assaulted two women inside a home near Weston and Coulter on Wednesday, July 14. The police say that he refused to let two women leave a home and assaulted them.

He is “5’10, with a medium build, short receding hair, goatee, and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark coloured hooded sweater, black jeans, and a black Toronto Blue Jays cap.”

The police are also looking for Evon Reid, 36. The police say that he assaulted three people after an argument inside a home in the Eglinton and Weston area on Tuesday, July 20.

Bit of a crime spree

A man went on a crime spree in Weston on Tuesday.

The police say a man was arrested after jumping in front of and on cars, breaking glass —and trying to steal an ambulance.
