Cell phone registry begins

Weston’s contribution to federal policy took effect this week. Stolen cell phones can now be registered and banned from Canada’s networks.

The telcos made this happen after pressure from Weston politicians. Many young people, often from Chaminade school, were mugged of their phones. Frances Nunziata and Mike Sullivan lobbied to have stolen cell phones banned in an effort to reduce their resale value—and thus their value to muggers.
