City considering traffic calming on Church St

Etobicoke York Community Council will consider polling residents about adding five traffic calming to Church Street between Pine and Elm.

Traffic would be slowed by being pinched between a planter and an island. The islands would be on the north side of the street, and the planters would be on the median.

Four of the five calming devices

Residents have complained about the speed of traffic on Church Street for some time, but the problem seems to have worsened recently.

To get traffic calming, half of all residents must respond to the survey, and 60% must want the islands.

  1. Twenty years ago residents complained about speeding on church St. The city refused to consider traffic calming or speed humps because it’s a bus route. (you can get speed humps on a bus route in the Bridle Path neighbourhood, but not in Weston).
Instead we got a sidewalk in the middle of the road, which the city claimed would slow traffic. It’s a very dangerous place for a sidewalk, too. Church St. is a collector road, and as such should have sidewalks on both sides. Not in the middle.
