Coolest gift ever.

Frances Nunziata received a piece of the tree that inspired The Maple Leaf Forever last week, in a ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag.

Nunziata, who is City Council Speaker, accepted a lectern and a gavel made by the Ontario Woodcarvers’ Association. The tree from which they were created was blown down in 2013. It was older than Confederation and inspired Alexander Muir to write the song that served as Canada’s unofficial national anthem until 1939.
