Weston Heritage Conservation District annual general meeting.
On November 22, 2012, at 7:00 PM, Toronto City Councillor Frank Di Giorgio, Ward 12 York South-Weston, and Laura Albanese, MPP York South-Weston MPP will be hosting a screening of the Award-winning documentary, THE INTERRUPTERS.
THE INTERRUPTERS, an Official Selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, recounts the gripping stories of former gang members who disrupt violence in their neighbourhoods, with bravado, humility and humour, as it happens. Striving to protect their communities from the brutality they once employed.
Director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) follows three “violence interrupters” over the course of a year as they attempt to intervene in disputes before they turn violent. The violence interrupters work for the innovative Chicago organization, CeaseFire, the brainchild of epidemiologist Gary Slutkin who for ten years battled the spread of cholera and AIDS in Africa. Slutkin believes that the spread of violence mimics that of infectious diseases, therefore the treatment should be similar: go after the most infected, and stop the infection at its source. “The interrupters try to halt another outbreak as if gunfire were an influenza, but they have to catch the disease first in order to cure it.”
