Islamic Education Centre burgled

The Islamic Education Centre on South Station Street was burgled in the early morning hours of Thursday. Between 1 and 3 am, thieves broke in and stole audio visual equipment, a safe containing cash, and kitchen appliances. On Tuesday of last week, Olympic Variety on King Street was robbed.

Burglaries, robberies, and automobile thefts are up in 12 Division (which encompasses more than just Weston) even though they are down in Toronto as a whole—and despite assurances at the last community meeting. The Police Force’s own statistics say that break-and-enters are up 14.5% over last year, robberies are up 19%, and auto thefts are up a whopping 48%. In the city, B&Es are down -7.5%, robberies are up only 2%, and auto thefts are down -8%.

The good news is that murders, sexual assaults, and thefts-over are down in Weston.

  1. Olympic Variety owners deserve a medal for persisting in serving the neighbourhood when they have suffered so many robberies.

The disconnect between what we hear at community meetings and what is really happening here is disturbing, and more disturbing is that our police, in spite of their secure funding and many extra benefits, can’t get a handle on penny-ante thieves who rob vulnerable neighbourhood stores and break in to steal “kitchen appliances,” along with the more obvious cash and audio equipment.

The line we’re given and the road we’re walking: different, and we’re noticing.
