John St will not be ceremonially dedicated, not renamed

The west end of John St will not be renamed “Peter the Barber Boulevard” in honour of Peter Kalamaris, the Weston barber; instead it will be ‘ceremonially dedicated’

City staff objected to the name change, saying that:

  • It could be construed as advertising
  • The city uses last names for streets
  • Toronto Police and EMS oppose the change
  • Several affected business owners are not in favour

Instead of changing the street name, staff asked council to consider a ceremonial dedication. This would keep John Street as the formal name, but add “Peter The Barber Boulevard” to the street signs.

Etobicoke York Community Council approved the change, and asked staff to look into changing the name of the laneway running behind the TD Bank and Popeye’s in Peter Kalamaris’ honour.

  1. Adam, too bad you missed the council meeting to see how the street naming really came to pass and was unanimously received and passed by the councillors on the spot ….including the heartfelt speeches by councillors Nunziata, Ford, and Mammoliti as well as the letters of support from MP Mike Sullivan and MPP Laura Albanese, and many residents and business owners that were attendence to show their support for the change.
