St John’s Anglican Church for sale

St John’s Anglican Church on Weston Road has gone up for sale.

The church was built in 1856 and renovated in 1999. According to, it is not designated as a heritage building”, which certainly sounds ominous. This, however, contradicts the city of Toronto’s database of heritage properties, in which it is listed.

The Anglican church is asking for $1,650,000, which will be used to build a new church at a different location for the newly-combined parish.

Thanks to A for the tip.

  1. Being “Listed” is not the same as “Designated”. Being listed means someone has looked at the building and suggests it should be looked at further for designation. Often times it is listed because it is old not because of historic or architectural value. Think of it like “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Arguments can be made either way for its designation or not.

    1. Oh no! This is bad news but also means that Weston has something else to fight for. This is such a visible part of the history of the area that it deserves to be championed for preservation. We can do with dome beauty in the eye of all be holders along Weston Rd.
      Heritage surely!

  2. Where has the Weston Heritage Conservation District been with this matter? Another soaring condo to be built……..
