UP Express wants more extended hours

In an announcement of thanks to the community, Metrolinx says that they will “need to increase our work outside of our regular hours” to complete the UP Express in time for 2015.

This is only the latest in a long series of announcements saying that they will be working outside of their regular hours (7–7 Monday to Friday and 9–7 on Saturday). Metrolinx says that the winter is to blame. It was “unusually severe, which among other factors has caused delays in some of our work”.

The deputy city manager said that the UP Express wouldn’t be done in time for the Pan Am Games today, according to Don Peat, from the Toronto Sun. Peat caught the deputy manager saying   “I don’t think it is going to be ready”.

The Pan Am Games have been used as a pretext for using diesel trains for the UP Express instead of electrifying immediately.

  1. Surprise me. Maybe some of their thanks to the community could be a tiny bit more action on repair of potholes in the rail crossing a taking and at John, and some contribution toward pothole-filling on Rosemount which is clearly the result of heavy traffic that results from the blacking of roads.

  2. I’m with you, Wondering.

That, and I’d like to add that this ‘letter of thanks’ really reads: we’re behind & we’ll use winter as an excuse (instead of blaming the community this time), & extended hours will continue to be the norm until we’re done, and you can’t do anything about it because the CTA said so. That, and since we’re SO far behind, we’re going to continue working from 11PM to 7AM, too.

“But don’t worry, when we’re done we’ll serve you a no-name hot dog and a soda at the bbq we’ll host at the park so we can pat ourselves on the back and formally put an end to all your bitching and complaining. It’s the least we can do.”

They can keep their hot dogs. If they want to give me a good chunk of the tens of thousands of dollars they’ve put aside in incentive money for the construction bosses for getting done on time, well then…now we’re talking.
